OTHER SPACES

Projection mapping is a technique for dynamically transforming an environment. Most who are familiar with projection mapping projects over the years have seen it used on large, sometimes complex, building facades. This example shows projection mapping applied to three relatively simple surfaces. But, besides the great graphics what is noteworthy is what drove the visuals. Tigerlab, working with WeLoveCode developed this "audio-reactive" backdrop that changed in response to what was being said.

"Black Ceremony" (2011) was an art event designed by Chinese artist, Cal Guo-Qiang, presented at Mathaf: Arab Art Museum in Doha, Qatar. It was a daytime fireworks display accomplished by making use of the smoke (rather than the flash) of 8,300 shells fitted with computer chips.

Explosion area 29,500 sq. meters.

”The Big Crunch” was designed by Raumlabor in the summer of 2011 for an "architectural happening" in Darmstadt, Germany. The concept was to build a structure of discarded scrap materials from nearby dump. The installation was only temporary, but one can imagine that even if it was deemed permanent, the philosophy behind such a building would never allow it to truly be finished, continually accumulating the debris of our disposable lifestyle. I love one of the questions this project poses. When is a city not already a conglomeration of its own cultural artifacts?
